Blueprint for Justice

Empowering victims of police brutality to heal and seek justice…

While filming a documentary about the aftermath of police brutality that families experience, the “Black Mothers Love & Resist” film team realized that many families don't know what to do after encountering police brutality. The Blueprint for Justice website is a companion website to the documentary. Blueprint for Justice is an online platform that provides resources, including steps and community support/ organizations to empower victims of police brutality to heal and seek justice.

This was a volunteer project I did for Develop for Good. On a macro-level, I worked with a pre-established style guide and spearheaded the redesign of the home page. I created wireframes of the resources page and mobile-optimized screens as a UI/UX Designer, Content Writer, and UX Researcher for my client, Adina Luo (member of the Black Mothers film team) over the span of 12+ weeks from March- August 2022. I also collaborated with my fellow UI/UX Designer & Content Writer, Satveer to create the content and copywriting for Blueprint for Justice’s resource pages. I collaborated with a product manager (Jacqueline Vo), software engineer (Anish Sinha), UI/UX Designers (Satveer Singh, Sai Ravi, and Katie Hall).

Users feel overwhelmed searching for resources on the internet that provide steps on seeking justice and healing from trauma…

During the process of creating the documentary, the “Black Mothers Love & Resist” film team found that victims of police brutality didn’t know what to do after encountering the traumatic event. Victims of police brutality had a difficult time finding support and information regarding steps to take during the aftermath of police brutality.

This inspired the question of…

How do we provide support and resources to victims during the aftermath of police brutality?

Goals

  • User goals: Find resources (national and local organizations, communities of support, therapy and counseling, legal aid, etc,) they need to seek justice against police brutality and heal from their trauma.

  • Product goals: Provide users with a starting point for healing and justice through resources tailor-made for victims of police brutality.

Users were struggling to find resources and were overwhelmed by the original web platform…

Primary Research & User Testing

Original Designs by Sai and Katie

My team and I conducted user interviews on 10+ participants and consulted with our client from the “Black Mothers Love & Resist” film team to determine user needs and pain points.

During testing, Satveer and I developed a dark/light mode to increase accessibility for users and determine which version users responded better to.

The main insights were…

How we focused on implementing trauma-informed designs on Blueprint for Justice…

Home Page and Easy-to-Find Resources

I redesigned the home page, so it’s easier for users to scan the page and find the information they need at a glance. I experimented with the animation to create a more interactive experience and increase accessibility.

Quick, Digestible Information & Using Trauma-Informed Language

Due to the sensitive subject that our web platform touches upon, we wanted to ensure that we implemented trauma-informed language in the resources page and make the information easy to digest to help our users understand the information at a glance.

Since our users value being informed, I designed a clean, easy-to-use interface to empower users to select the best resources for their specific situation.

Optimizing Web Pages for Mobile

Since 40% of our users used mobile devices to visit our website, I optimized the web pages for mobile to fit their dynamic screens.

Dark/Light Mode for Accessibility

Satveer and I implemented a dark/light mode to allow for more personalization, matching our users’ dynamic browsers.

Mobile Version

I implemented a dark/light mode toggle on the mobile version to make it easier for users to access and customize their experience based on their preferences.

Desktop Version

The dark/light mode allows for more seamless integration, increasing frequency of use.

Takeaways

Overall, I learned that personalization and making the product as accommodating as possible is important to integrate a product into a user’s life.

I learned about implementing trauma-informed design to improve a user’s experience of a product, making everything clear to the users to reduce confusion and ensure that users can easily navigate the website.
